Sanders began his political career as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, where he served four terms. In 1990 he was elected as an Independent to the House of Representatives from Vermont’s at-large congressional seat where he served for 16 years until his election to the US Senate.

In the Senate he’s taken on many of the biggest issues facing our nation and works hard to influence legislation in a variety of areas. As part of that agenda, we are lucky to count him a strong supporter of ESOPs, and he’s been supportive and active trying to secure legislative victories that advance employee ownership.

Notably, he first ran for president in 2016, when he won 23 primaries and caucuses, based largely on enthusiastic grassroots support. In 2020, ran again for the Democratic party nomination for president, nearly gaining the nomination over then-Vice President Biden.

Senator Sanders has led a lifetime of activism for the causes that he’s believed in and supported. As a leading and highly influential voice in the Democratic party, he’s been Time magazine’s Person of the Year (2015), has appeared a couple of films, and written several books on politics.

His 20th book, Rage, went behind the scenes of the Trump presidency like never before. His 21st book, Peril (co-authored with acclaimed Washington Post reporter Robert Costa), looks at a perilous time in American history - the transition between the Presidencies of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. In his speeches, Woodward looks at the expanding powers of the presidency and the important lessons that can be learned from the presidents he's covered.
